Network FAQs

Can I choose which cellular network my JuiceBar Gen 3 charger goes on?

No, the Network and JuiceBar will work together to determine the best cellular network for your station(s) based on your station’s location and cellular reception.

The cellular network used will depend on the network availability in your geographical area, as well as SIM card compatibility.

Learn More
Can I use a network that JuiceBar has not onboarded yet on the JuiceBar Gen 3 charger?

While JuiceBar Gen 3 chargers are OCPP compliant, each network must go through a validation process before it can be used with the JuiceBar Gen 3 charger to ensure compatibility. Each validation is unique, and timeline and cost can vary based on the network’s readiness and compatibility.

If you have a network, you would like supported by our chargers, please reach out to your JuiceBar sales representative to discuss validation opportunities.

Learn More
I purchased a JuiceBar Gen 3 charger which requires an RFID card (FOB), and I need the RFID cards. Where do I get them?

RFID cards/Fobs are acquired through your network provider.

For example: AmpUp, EVConnect, EVGateway, etc.

JuiceBar does not provide RFID swipe cards/Fobs.

Learn More
How many ethernet cables do I need to run to my JuiceBar Gen 3 charger?

An ethernet connected JuiceBar Gen 3 charger requires one dedicated live ethernet cable per charging connector.

For example: a dual charger connected via ethernet will require two live ethernet cables – one connected to each side of the charger.

Ethernet cables cannot be daisy chained together. If chargers are daisy chained together only the first charger receiving the live ethernet cable will be fully operational.

Learn More
Can I put an ethernet (POE) switch inside the JuiceBar Gen 3 charger enclosure?

No, installing any unauthorized hardware inside the JuiceBar Gen 3 charger enclosure will void the warranty.

Learn More
Can I order a non-networked JuiceBar Gen 3 charger and network it later?

Yes, however this requires a controller swap with associated parts and labor costs that are not covered by the warranty.

SMART Network FAQs

What is Smart Charging?

Smart EV Charging or EV Smart Network or Charge Station Management System (CSMS)
refers to a system where an EV Driver must initiate a charging session via a data connection
between the electric vehicle and the charging station. The charging station shares that data
connection with a charge point operator (CPO) via a backend Network used to manage the
station and provide reporting data.

Learn More
What happens during a smart charging event?

Smart charging requires an EV driver to identify themselves at the charging station.
Identification connects the EV driver, charge point, and the charging event together. The right
price will be charged to the right customer, and money is directed to the right charging station
owner. Since it’s smart, everything happens almost automatically. If no fees are incurred, it can
still meter energy, provide reporting and allow for access control.

Learn More
Are there different types of SMART charging networks?

Yes

Closed/Proprietary
To communicate between the charging station and the central operating system
(network), closed stations use their own proprietary software in conjunction with their
own proprietary hardware. If the site host decides they want to change out their
network, they also have to rip out and replace their hardware.

Open/OCPP Compliant
Allow owners of OCPP compliant stations to connect to their networks using standard
communication protocols. This allows Site Hosts a choice in both hardware and
software, allowing them to mix and match what works for their EV charging programs
and future proof their hardware investment.
Customers are free to select their network of choice prior to installation, and can work
with JuiceBar to change networks after installation for any reason, for an additional
cost.

Learn More
What does Validated Network mean?

A validated network is a network that has been tested and confirmed to work with JuiceBar
hardware, which enables a smoother/enhanced user experience.

Learn More
Can I un-network the station at a later time?

Yes, but you will need to install a new controller. The cost to replace the controller is $350/controller plus shipping and labor.

Learn More
What are the benefits of using a validated network?

There are various benefits including:

  • If there is a problem with the station, networks can remote-in to pull logs and observe
behavior, potentially saving the site host the cost of a contractor visit
  • Site Hosts can recoup money spent on electricity and infrastructure investment
  • Site Hosts can control access and energy flow to station
  • Reporting features provide important details to help the organization manage their charging
    program
Learn More
What Networks are Validating on JuiceBar Chargers?

JuiceBar has its own proprietary network called activateEV.  In addition, EVConnect and AmpUp are validated.

3G Shutdown FAQs

Which cellular providers are ending 3G service?

All major cellular services will have shut down their 3G networks by early 2023.

Learn More
What are my options if I have a 3G EV charger?

If your current EV charger is dependent on a 3G network, you have two options: upgrade your obsolete charger or replace your charger with a new unit.

Learn More
If my charger company will upgrade the unit, why replace my device?

Upgrading your charger’s hardware will cost you thousands of dollars, and the result is a unit that is still outdated and needs further hardware upgrades in a few years. A better option than enduring the high cost of updating obsolete EV chargers is replacing them with superior JuiceBar chargers.

Learn More
Why are some EV chargers having issues with the end of 3G?

Many competitor companies have proprietary hardware that is compliant with the 3G network. These chargers depend on 3G connectivity to provide owners and customers services like management, monitoring and charger payment.

Learn More
How will I know if my charger is affected by this 3G interruption?

Many popular chargers are all tied into the 3G network, but many other chargers may be affected by this change. Without replacement or upgrades, your EV charger will not function. Make sure to check with your EV charger provider to see if your unit will be affected.

Learn More
Is it cheaper to upgrade rather than buy a new charger?

Not necessarily. Depending on which company provides your charger, you could be billed thousands of dollars for an upgrade. JuiceBar provides a Trade Up program that offers $1,000 towards replacing existing functioning or non-functioning EV chargers from any other brand.

Learn More
How do I know JuiceBar chargers will work when networks eventually update to 5G?

JuiceBar chargers use an open protocol system, allowing you to choose your own network. If you decide to switch networks, JuiceBar chargers will enable you to retain existing hardware. JuiceBar is so confident with their chargers they offer a 10-year guarantee.

Learn More
What are the benefits of purchasing a new JuiceBar charger?
  • New JuiceBar chargers provide a much faster charge than outdated models from other companies. Newer EVs can charge at 48amps, whereas your current models are 30- or 32-amps. This updated speed means multiple users can use one charger, doubling your charger capability.
  • New JuiceBar chargers incorporate upcoming software updates that make the chargers’ demand response more efficient and allow JuiceBar to incorporate V2G/V2B when available.
  • JuiceBar’s open protocol system makes incorporating the charger into a building, energy or parking management system far simpler.
  • JuiceBar builds its standard application programming interface (API) for all commonly used systems. This API is critical when implementing a power management application.
  • JuiceBar’s standard network system is half the cost of competitor systems.
